What I do now that I am retired
Tuesday I got the call to watch a sick grandchild for the day so his parents could work. I am the primary babysitter backup for all of my grandchildren. Retirement gives me that flexibility. The last school year I picked up the three youngest from the busstop and kept them until one of their parents got off work and took them home. I am also accompanying a daughter to outpatient surgery on this Friday.
At first I thought that this was an imposition on my quest for meaningful work and it is not easy caring for children, but I now know that this is an important role for me. Besides, I have pretty much given up on the idea of returning to the work force full time. I am learning to enjoy the slower pace, and I am able to re-arrange my schedule for the things that I want/need to do.
- Contract IT work
I used to do contract IT jobs, both as an independent contractor and as a W-2 employee, but the work pays less with increasing documentation requirements. It’s all due to the deplorable state of theeconomy. At least that’s how it seems to me.
- Next time
Another thing I do to occupy my time.
